Hiking Heroes Jeju: Updates on Our Journey to Sustainability

Hello, everyone!

The Jeju Chapter is checking in. It’s been a while since we shared our updates!

As proud members of Hiking Heroes, we are dedicated to hiking, picking up trash, and preserving Jeju, a natural treasure and Korea’s top tourist destination. We’re excited to share some of our recent activities with you.

1. Reducing Food Waste through Food Bank Donation

Jeju is home to four international schools, and many students leave for the mainland during school breaks. Unfortunately, this often results in large amounts of unused food being discarded right before vacations. Recognizing this issue, we contacted the local government and were introduced to a food bank center.  Now, before each school break, we collect surplus food and supplies and donate them to the food bank center, which distributes them to over 1,200 low-income families. What began as a small initiative in our school has expanded to the broader community, even earning recognition in the local newspaper.

2. Flea Markets and Charity Bazaars

As an island, Jeju faces unique challenges in waste management, as transporting trash to the mainland is not easy. This makes reusing and recycling essential in daily life. Flea markets and charity bazaars are common events that promote sustainability and waste reduction on the island. This year, we actively participated in school bazaars and local flea markets, donating the proceeds to environmental organizations. Our chosen beneficiary this year was Hot Pink Dolphins, a marine conservation group dedicated to protecting the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins native to Jeju. In addition to raising funds, we also launched a petition campaign advocating for the creation of a designated habitat for these dolphins.

3. Raising Youth Awareness

We believe in the power of young people to bring about meaningful change. Through platforms like youth forums, speech contests, and debate tournaments, we continuously raise awareness about climate change and the responsibility we share for future generations. Last year, we won the Grand Prize at an environmental forum, and this year, we had the honor of delivering a speech at the Jeju World Natural Heritage Festival. Building on this momentum, we are preparing to launch an inter-school forum, bringing together environmental clubs and students from Jeju’s international schools to discuss and address the island’s pressing environmental issues.

Living in Jeju, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, inspires us to appreciate its unparalleled natural beauty and motivates us to take meaningful action to protect it.
