Working to be Environmentally Friendly

Peony Kang

As the topic of climate change begins taking more prevalence in modern news, more and more people are asking: how can we help? And while many are quick to argue that there isn’t much that individuals can do to significantly help the climate crisis, there are multiple ways where you can help your local environment and reduce the amount of harm you’re adding to the problem. With so many people doing so, these small benefits build up, and hopefully, one by one, humanity can start reworking the places around us to be more conscious of the environment.

One way to help combat the climate crisis is reducing the amount of direct waste you create. Examples of this would be using reusable grocery bags, swapping single-use utensils with reusable ones, and packing lunch in reusable bags and containers. Along with this, recycling items rather than simply throwing them in the trash can help reduce the amount of waste you’re creating. Upcycling what would have previously been trash into something useful also is another important method. Along with this, cleaning up the local environment and picking up trash is another way to individually help the planet.

To make your impact a little larger, helping and/or establishing practices in organizations also helps. At school, work to support or create a “Green Team” that would focus on reducing

the school’s harm on the environment. Work with the recycling program at your school, and raise awareness of other methods that your school offers to reduce its harm on the environment. Work with local organizations to increase your impact on helping the environment, and support other efforts to combat the climate crisis.

Finally, support global efforts that focus on reducing the harm of large corporations and

countries. Write to legislators, asking them to support climate movements and oppose things

furthering the climate crisis. Join protests that urge politicians, businesses, and organizations to

work to reduce their harm on the planet. Share information about any new updates on the climate crisis through platforms you may have. Although you may feel you are just an insignificantly small piece of the large movement, your actions matter.
